Dan Noyes is inspired by shrines he has encountered in his travels around the world. Through the layers of ink and the processes of printmaking -printing on wood, monotype and other media -he slowly discovers the image. Discovery and accident coupled with the craft of the medium is how his images are created. Blue is a favorite color and while the prints are serene they often have a vitality that relates to the energy of the shrine. In addition, Noyes is interested in poetry and art of the Edo period of Japan. The connection to nature and the interest in transitory beauty were themes that resonated with his own experience. The aesthetic of the transitory beauty of the “floating” world greatly influenced his recent images.
