A classic Hanukkah tale, now available in a beautiful anniversary edition. A Caldecott Honor book.
On the first night of Hanukkah, a weary traveler named Hershel of Ostropol eagerly approaches a village, where plenty of latkes and merriment should warm him.
But when he arrives not a single candle is lit. A band of frightful goblins has taken over the synagogue, and the villagers cannot celebrate at all! Hershel vows to help them. Using his wits, the clever trickster faces down one goblin after the next, night after night. But can one man alone save Hanukkah and live to tell the tale?
An original adventure featuring a traditional Jewish folk hero, this clever story has been a family favorite for decades and was named a Caldecott Honor book when it was originally published. Trina Schart Hyman’s leering goblins are equal parts terrifying and ridiculous as they match wits with Hershel, trying to keep him from lighting the menorah and celebrating Hanukkah.
The 25th anniversary edition includes an insightful afterword from the author and publisher explaining the book’s origins and remembering Trina Schart Hyman, the illustrator who brought the tale to life. This classic picture book is a perfect Hanukkah gift and a wonderful read-aloud.
For more tales of this clever folk hero, read The Adventures of Hershel of Ostropol— another collaboration between master storyteller Eric A. Kimmel and Trina Schart Hyman.

This was one of my favorite books as a kid This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I bought a copy recently to read at our family’s Hanukkah gathering, and it’s just as charming and thrilling as I remember. It’s a great story that teaches lessons about courage, faith, and keeping a good sense of humor even when the world around you is a scary place. The story includes the greatest hits of a traditional Hanukkah: lighting the menorah, playing dreidel, and making latkes, so whether your family celebrates every year or doesn’t know the…
Great Story, Kids Love It I remembered reading this book as a child, so I purchased it for my friend’s kids, ages 3 and 5, because she wanted me to teach them about Hannukah. They LOVED it. My friend told me later that they had to hide the book because the kids wanted to read it over and over. It doesn’t tell the story of Hannukah, if that’s what you’re looking for, but it discusses some of the Hannukah traditions. There aren’t a lot of great Hannukah books out there, so I’m glad this book exists.Note: Some…
Excellent story, I’ve loved for over 20yrs! I love this story! My father used to borrow it from another teacher and read it to us when we were younger and recently him and I were talking about it. After putting our brains together we remembered the name and I ordered a copy for my own daughters. They both love it too!
